>> Um might just go to the EV uptake. EVsales are booming as you know. Um canyou just talk us through the policieslike the EV discount? I know we madesome changes in the budget and the newvehicle efficiency standard. What rolethese policies and others might beplaying in um spurring EV sales, butalso what is the impact on fuel
Mr Andrew Hutchinson
>> Good afternoon, Senator. Uh AndrewHutchinson, division head of emissionsreduction division. Happy to talk to allof those things. I'm joined by mycolleague, Mr. Ryan. Um, I'll give yousome kind of high level uh answers andsome statistics that might be helpful, but if there's anything in particularthat you'd like us to go to beyond thatthat we're not touching on, please letus know. Um, so it's been uh a period ofrapid acceleration of uptake forelectric vehicles across Australia, ashas been well covered in the media. umuh uptake was already acceleratingthrough last year but um particularlywith the outbreak of conflict in theMiddle East has has rapidly accelerateduh to the point where electric vehiclesare accounting uh across the year for28.6% of new sales in Australia. Uhthat's the period from 1 January throughto 30th September 2026. That's up from13.1% in 2025 calendar year. Soobviously those figures will shift alittle bit more as we head to the end ofthe calendar year here. uh on a monthlybasis. In September 2026 alone, EVsaccounted for 34.5%uh of all light vehicle sales comparedto 16.1% in September 2025. Uh and inboth August and September of this year, battery electric vehicles, it's aspecific subset of EVs, outsold petrolonly new light vehicles for the firsttime. So clearly um a range ofincentives are applying in themarketplace and Australian consumers areresponding to that. uh a lot of that weuh attribute to a combination of factorsbut clearly there is a strong policysignal in there uh I can't provide um aparticular breakdown on what proportionwe think is due to say you know fuelprices versus policy signals uh butclearly the new vehicle efficiencystandard is having an effect and we cansee that through a range of indirect umoutcomes in the marketplace including agreater variety of electric vehicles onoffer uh and much uh greater range ofvehicles for lower prices Um mycolleague Mr. Ryan might wish to add
Paul Ryan
>> Paul Ryan, acting branch head land andtransport. Um as Mr. Hutchinson said, umthe number of of EV models available inAustralia has more than tripled over thelast four years from around 60 models inJune 2022 to more than 230 models byOctober 2026.Uh and as of 1st of October 2026, thereare about around 20 EV models withstarting prices under 40,000 nowavailable.
