Dr Steven Kennedy
Uh um well as the secretary of thedepartment um um yes in in establishinga fuel security role and and in thatrole being run the fuel the uh deputysecretary who um plays that role ispresent today if you wish to address putsome questions to her.
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
>> Okay. Um I understand you're quiteexpert in these matters, but um myfollow-up question is um according tonational accounts, diesel has climbedfrom 5% of our total imports um by valuelast year to 10% now. So we're basicallyimporting inflation when we importdiesel. Um is reducing our reliance ondiesel a priority of yours and PMC's?
Dr Steven Kennedy
Um um I guess that um goes to a policyquestion about um um uh diesel dieseluse in Australia, but certainly a focusof the department in light of uh theMiddle East crisis is understandingsupply chain resilience and our relianceon particular fuels and u given the sizeof our resources sector and agriculturalsector. What the current crisis hasdemonstrated is a high level of relireliance on diesel and it's something weare focused on
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
>> and um Treasury advised us that in 2030we'll be burning more uh more dieselthan we are today I think 2.4 billionlers um do you hold any concerns thatour economy will be more vulnerable tofuel shocks in 2030 than we are today?
Dr Steven Kennedy
Uh well I think the government's putforward a number of policies to addressissues around um um fuel security. Ifyou don't mind I can ask my colleague toquickly um provide some more detail.
Ms Anthea Harris
>> U thank you uh Dr. Kennedy and thank youSenator. My name is Anthia Harris. UmI'm the deputy secretary for the uheconomy industry and resources group uhas well as the fuel supply coordinator.uh in relation to measures for futureresilience and trying to reduce ourAustralia's dependence on fossil fuelswhich are imported um mostly uh therehave been a number of programs that havebeen announced. So in particular the $1.1 billion um cleaner fuels program umto establish a domestic lowcarbon liquidfuels industry. Uh there's the $55million um to deliver the transportresilience and capacity kickstartprogram to incentivize increased freightvolumes by rail and maritime transport. So a mode shift piece uh $4.5 million toaccelerate the electrification uh ofAustralia posts um delivery for uhfleet. Um the uh so there have beenmeasures that work across um looking tofuture resilience not just increasingstores and availability of fossil fuelsand making uh putting Australia in amore secure position on that front butthinking about measures of how we canreduce our reliance on fossil fuels
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
>> Um thank you. uh my is it myunderstanding is that these fundingstreams are all out for consultation andodds post is only 1% total funding is
Ms Anthea Harris
>> yes I can uh in fact for more detail Iwould refer you to the um to theappropriate department so the departmentof infrastructure in relation to thelowcarbon liquid fuels um so there issome consultationum uh about that uh uh ongoing
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
>> and so how are we going to reduce ourover our vulnerability um to diesel
Ms Anthea Harris
again in the long run um uh in terms ofdependence so there's as I said there'smultiple streams of activity in terms ofum reducing vulnerability in terms ofhaving more stocks available um thosesorts of things but that uh investing inlooking at alternative fuels so inparticular lowcarbon liquid fuels uh andlooking at um thinking about how we candeal with mode shift uh and uh what wecan continue doing on theelectrification front. They're all partof a kind of an overall piece aroundwhat can be done for the longer term toum reduce that vulnerability.
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
>> Thank you. And I'm conscious you'reprobably going to be leaving soon. Dr.Kennedy, can I just ask one unrelatedquestion then I'll return to Diesel.
