>> Thank you. Uh I have some questions. Dr.Kennedy, before we let you go, um aboutuh the refugee humanitarian intake andthe prime minister decision andpotential intervention on this one. Onthe 27th of August, the prime ministertexted a journalist at the ABC that the20,000 intake remains government policyand will be continued in future years.I want to understand whether that textwas cleared with the department. Was itcleared with a cabinet division or withthe treasurer before it was was sent oror or with you personally?
Dr Steven Kennedy
>> Uh the text wasn't cleared with me umpersonally. I'll just ask my colleaguesto um respond. Um
Blair Exell
>> thank you Blair Exod deputy secretarysocial policy and cabinet group. No, thetext was not cleared with um socialpolicy group.
Hon Jane Hume
Okay, thank you. So before that text,I I want to know whether any uh cabinetor ERC decision had been taken tocontinue the humanitarian program at20,000 beyond 2627.
Eliza Strapp
>> Um hi Senator Eliza Strap um firstassistant secretary um social policydivision. um the humanitarian program umor the the 20,000 um the 20,000 numberum as I think as the prime ministerstated um is um uh is in place untilnext year. Um there has uh there is aprocess that um as I think the and I canum get where the the I've got thestatement where the prime minister madeum it is under as he said thegovernment's supporting the extensionbut it just has to go through theprocess of um uh of uh I guessconsideration of the funding amount andum how it will um uh work with homeaffairs. So um uh it hasn't been throughthe formal decision-m process um but ithas um uh it has been um I guess it hasbeen flagged as a decision that'll bemade in myo. Um so the prime ministermade that statement when he talked aboutthe extension and the intention toextend it. Um the the discussion or theum decisions just haven't been umformalized and they will be undertakenin by EO.
Blair Exell
have the the quote if that helps. So,great.>> The prime minister stated the refugeeintake needs to be renewed in theupcoming budget as the 20,000 places wasavailable for four years.>> This intake number remains governmentpolicy and will be continued in futureyears consistent with Australia'shumanitarian commitments and sits besideour strong border security measures.
