Senator David Shoebridge
>> Thank you. Um Minister, could I ask youabout the remote area allowance? Um, Ithink it's still $910 a week for asingle person. And the last increase wasthe grand total of 35 cents and it was25 years ago. Um, what does a$130 a dayactually buy you in remote areas?Doesn't seem to come close to dealingwith the additional costs in housing,>> food, energy, water, clothing, living.
Hon Malarndirri McCarthy
>> It's really difficult. We've had thiscentral land council down here justrecently talking with us about it. Umboth Marian Scrimmer and myself met withuh Dr. Douglas and others who came fromthe out stations representatives fromthe central land council and they'revery concerned. Uh we have raised that.Uh what we know is that we can't move onit at this particular point in time.I've been looking at uh other areas likethe food security program and thepolicies that we're trying to roll out.uh in our stores uh across uh not onlythe Northern Territory but other remoteareas of Australia uh in that foodsecurity policy. It's about thereduction of prices uh in the stores.Send shoe bridge. So we are very mindfulof the pressures on people living
Senator David Shoebridge
>> Yeah. But I mean when you say it can'tbe done at this point, what does thatmean? Is that code for something?
Hon Malarndirri McCarthy
>> No, it's not code for anything. It justcan't be done right now. SenatorShoebridge, I don't have theresponsibility of it. It's somethingthat uh uh Minister Plebec hasresponsibility uh for this particulararea,>> but and the advocacy of both the CentralLand Council and others has been veryfirm in regards to uh pointing out those

issues. Could could I ask the CLC,Central Lands Council, you've done thenumbers and you've tried to work outwhat the um the remote area allowancewould need to rise to to sort of meetwhat it was meeting decades ago when itwas first set. Have you got a figure andcan you tell us what it is?
Speaker 35
>> Josie Douglas, general manager, professional services.Uh we uh CLC along with um others umacross Australia are calling for theremote air allowance to be increased to$12130uh a week and that would be an increaseof $1730 a day for a single adult. Thisrepresents a 30% increase in the overallvalue of a single job seeker payment andit's pitched at 30%uh even though we know that the cost ofliving for remote is 40%.The 30% does take into account the 30remote items essential subsidy which isvery welcome. So it's a pragmaticuh number crunchinguh andit goes to um providing targeted atargeted measure for cost of reliefliving for uh people living in remoteand very remote uh Australia.
Senator David Shoebridge
>> Um can I I know we're running behindtime chair and I that that's my finalquestion. Can I thank all of you for allthe work you do? I really appreciate it.And Minister, could I ask you if youwill raise again with your ministerialcolleagues the urgency of this remotearea allowance lift?
Hon Malarndirri McCarthy
>> Senator Shoebridge. Uh we do advocateand we will continue to do so.
