Uh, Senator Chisum, precoid, Australian food production wasat about $60 billion annuallyand now it's about $11 billion. What agreat day for Australia and theagricultural industry in this country.Froco>> to now the rate of backpackers hasincreased comparatively to the rate offood production. Does it continue to beyour evidence that it's a good idea todrop our rates of backpackers to preconumbersand maintain food security in this

country. Uh what I talked throughSenator was our aim of where we want toget to on uh the nomf figure. Uh thatdoes have an impact on working holidaymakers. Uh what I also talked through isthe work that we've done around fe freeTA where there's more than 20,000 peoplewho've participated in that inagriculture courses. uh the work thatwe've done in the palm scheme uh toincrease the number of employers uh thatoperate in that scheme and also thenumber of people coming in to work aspart of that at the same time and ourcommitment to work with industry toensure that we get the workers wherethey need to be uh for harvest time. Sothat is what we are doing as part ofhitting that net overseas uh migrationtarget that the government have set. Uhand we're working constructively withindustry as is Minister Burke about howthose settings apply.
Senator Vanessa Bleyer

Hon Anthony Chisholm
>> Uh what I'm saying is that thegovernment have set a target on the netoverseas migration of what we want to dothat will have an impact on You've said

idea to play politics with our farmersto drop the overseas migration rate. Isthat what you're telling us today,Senator Chisholm?
Hon Anthony Chisholm
>> The only one here playing politics isyourself, uh, Senator. I'm talkingthrough and trying to answer yourquestions. Um a good example is aroundthe palm scheme where uh the numbersfrom uh March 2020 where we had around8,000 workers uh has now gone to over30,000 workers and uh the majority theoverwhelming majority of them areworking in agriculture and the meatindustry. So uh we think that there'smore opportunity around palm workers aswell uh to ensure that we're getting theworkers uh where we need them when we
Senator Glenn Sterle
