>> Thank you, Chair. I also want toacknowledge the horrific headlines thatfamilies and educators, many of whom aredoing the right thing, woke to and arestill reeling from. and also I supposeacknowledge that we're 18 months on fromthe original story um and stories anddespite the safety of reforms we arestill seeing these harrowing headlinesand it's a great tragedy. Um Minister, you said you've committed to reform butcan you explain to us how a workinghow a worker studying towards aqualification can be left alone with
Senator Jess Walsh
this is um part of the work uh that isbeing done um by education um ministersat the moment. Um you know this horrificum incident at Inenuum occurred in uh 2024um uh of course before educationministers um stood up uh and made thereforms um that we have made. Um we haveasked for um a review uh into howworking towards qualifications appliesuh and in the circumstances where it umwhere it may apply. Uh and uh thatreview um is underway. Um we'll beupdated on it I think um Miss Crane atthe next um education minister'smeeting. uh and it's an important partof the work. Um I would go back thoughSenator in relation to that particularincident to comments I made to SenatorO. Sullivan and say that um that servicehad responsibilities to ensure that thatchild was adequately supervised and thatchild was clearly not adequatelysupervised.
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
Do you think that a review is enough umif children are potentially being harmedright now and will you commit toexploring an end to that provision andshouldn't that be very urgent?
Senator Jess Walsh
>> Um there is a a a body of work going onaround um adequate supervision um inearly childhood education settings. Um Ithink there can be um a place for someeducators um in some settings to beworking towards their qualifications.Um but those circumstances need to be umvery clearly specified um and theyshould only ever be used um if theservice can guarantee that adequatesupervision of children is occurring. Soum the review of um the working towardsum qualifications um provisionum is also part of a broader body ofwork uh on ensuring um that children areadequately supervised at all times uhand that providers understand theirobligations um to do that.
Senator Steph Hodgins-May
Um can I confirm um is that nexteducation minister's meeting on Monday?
