Senator David Pocock
>> Is there any budget saving from this?
Dr Doug Hilton
>> No, this is not a budget saving measure
Senator David Pocock
>> No money saved.
Dr Doug Hilton
>> No, absolutely not.
Senator David Pocock
>> Um, how many of the roles that aresubject to consultation uh and may becut are permanent positions?
Dr Doug Hilton
>> perhaps do you want to talk to that? Youmean total of the 86?Should we take that on notice?
Senator David Pocock
>> notice how many of the the new roleswill be permanent positions and how manywill be short-term>> um contracts.at last uh Senate estimates I askedabout any further job losses that santicipated. Um, I accept that this isjust consultation. Um, butProfessor Huntington talked about havingto hold space. Um, we had a bit of aback and forth as to what that actuallyum meant, but did you know that this wason the cards at the last estimatesor was this is this a new take that>> new development
Professor Elanor Huntington
>> uh deputy chief executive um uh Senatorand I do apologize again if um my choiceof attorney phrase was opaque um as Dr.Dr. Hilton said uh we have set ourselvesup to be in a position where we haveannually a review cycle to look at alook across the entire researchportfolio and as Dr. Hilton said um weum would expect that as part of that wewould be um there might be someconsequential refresh um activities thatcome off the back of that. So I wasspeaking in the abstract having um somesense of the annual review cycle notwith any particularly pre-cookedperspective in mind
Dr Doug Hilton
>> and and maybe just senator to put thechanges in context you know I think whatwe are incredibly grateful for fromgovernment is the increased funding thatmeans those changes that we implementedover the last 18 months to to savemoney. the ones we've talked about a lotin this forum are behind us and we'reback to a position where we've probablybeen for the last 20 years where sort of50 to 100 staff each year are subject tothat potential for redundancy and that'sthe way the organization has for a verylong time>> ensured that the skills we have arecurrent contemporary science skills andthat hasn't led to a major erosion in umyou know in the the type of science wedo quite the opposite. It's meant thatwe have kept contemporary and modern.
Senator David Pocock
And in terms of your um the increases ofyour costs at SRO, the cost of research, those are the costs. Um I've had manyback and forths with minister about umhow the government says well morefunding than ever to Syra and you know Ithink your appropriation goes up by 1% a
Dr Doug Hilton
year. a little over that
Senator David Pocock
>> just just over 1% a year.>> What are the increases in the last 12months on things like>> I don't know uh IT cyber security uhsome of your other costs.
Dr Doug Hilton
>> So the cyber security one's a reallyimportant one and the funding that wereceived in the budget was to cover thatuplift in cyber security and theadditional cost of cyber security. Sothat's part of our sustainability. We wemonitor costs pretty carefully. um wecan take on notice the the the increasein costs that we found over the last youknow perhaps for the last full financialyear compared with the one before. It'sa little bit hard 3 months into afinancial year to be estimating what ourcosts will be. Um but it's somethingthat I think uh every organizationgovernment private sector faces.
